New Delhi [India], September 24 (ANI): In accordance with statutory provisions, Delhi’s Home Minister Kailash Gahlot chaired a meeting of the Sentence Review Board (SRB) on February 23, 2024, and recommended the premature release of 14 convicts from prison, after which on Tuesday the proposal for the premature release of these 14 convicts has been sent to the Chief Minister for onward transmission to LG for his approval.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Director General (Prison), Principal Secretary (Law), Principal District Judge, Special Commissioner of Police, and Director of Social Welfare.
In an official statement, Home Minister Kailash Gahlot said, “The Sentence Review Board carefully evaluated each case on its individual merits, balancing the principles of justice and rehabilitation. The recommendation to release these individuals early reflects our commitment to reintegrating reformed individuals into society and reducing the burden on the prison system.”
The Delhi Home Minister stated, “We believe in offering a second chance to those who have demonstrated genuine remorse and improvement during their incarceration.”
During the meeting, the SRB reviewed a total of 92 cases, of which 14 were recommended for premature release.
The proposal had been submitted to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena for approval. Earlier, it was returned by LG for sending the same through the Chief Minister.
On Tuesday (today), the proposal for the premature release of these 14 convicts was sent to the Chief Minister for onwards transmission to LG for his approval, the release stated. (ANI)
