Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], November 12 (ANI): Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin on Tuesday urged Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar to secure the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained and their fishing boats by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Sharing the details in the letter, Stalin mentioned that on November 9 Sri Lankan Navy took into custody twenty-three fishermen from Rameswaram, two mechanized fishing boats and again on November 12, another fishing boat and 12 fishermen were apprehended.
Stalin highlighted that “apprehension of Tamil Nadu fishermen in 2024 is the highest in the last seven years.” And said that “arrests not only disrupt their livelihoods but also cause immense distress to their families.”
“On 09.11.2024, the Sri Lankan Navy took into custody twenty-three fishermen from Rameswaram, two mechanized fishing boats,” said Stalin in the letter.
“Further, on 12.11.2024, another fishing boat from Nagapattinam and 12 fishermen were apprehended,” he added further.
I, therefore, request you to make immediate diplomatic efforts to prevent the arrests of our fishermen and to secure the expeditious release of all the fishermen and their fishing boats, read the letter. (ANI)
